CLAUDIA ROSA LUKAS
Claudia Rosa Lukas, an Austrian and Vienna-based eclectic designer, graduated from the Universities of Applied Arts in Vienna and Berlin in 1997 under the guidance of Vivienne Westwood, Helmut Lang, Marc Bohan and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Shortly after her first creations she launched her own homonymous fashion label. In 2001 Lukas won the Fashion Award of the City of Vienna, and in 2002 she was one of the selected participants at the 17th “Festival International des Arts de la Mode à Hyères” in France. The same year she took part in the prestigious fashion competition “Enkamania” in Italy, featuring Franca Sozzani as chairman. Thanks to her international approval Lukas is one of the 25 privileged European designers to join the European Commission’s “EU Gateway to Japan” project, introducing constantly evolving, inventive European fashion to the Japanese audience. In addition she is regularly presenting her collections at the Prêt-à-Porter Fashion Week in Paris, at trade shows in France and Italy, alongside with being on display in selected showrooms in Austria, France and Japan. Her unconventional, artistic approach has favoured the cooperation with Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauer at the Vienna States Opera, where Lukas took care of costume design. Another field of great interest for Lukas is multimedia art, reflecting her capacity to incorporate technologies in various projects. In her collections she expresses herself as a multi-layered affair, combining minimalism -clean cuts and structured shapes- with female sensuality and persuasiveness. Lukas’ extraordinary eye for detail attracts a wide, challenging audience and surprises with playful technical masterpieces. Every garment is one-of-a-kind, suitable for the fast-paced everyday life yet perfect for a night out. Her choice of materials is influenced by wearability, functionality of the final garment and thus she prefers high-quality Austrian and Italian fabrics including wool (fine knitting), jersey and cotton. Claudia Rosa Lukas’ attitude towards world events is very critical; history and political views, as well as different cultures, art and images are resonating in her work, representing a major fund of inspiration. Her repertoire encompasses a blend of ideas, fusing dream and reality to underline people’s synthesis of personality, intellectualism and femininity.
